I made my first pinch pot in my junior year of High School and after my first slab project I knew ceramics and clay was my medium. I love the feel of clay and it’s almost magical properties; it can be liquid slip, solid and yet so very flexible, solid and carvable before being fired and becoming fragile yet hearty and strong after it is fired in the kiln. Clay can be used to make things of great beauty, practical function or both.

I started my advanced education at Arcadia University in Glenside PA and studied abroad, in my junior year, at the Glasgow School of Art in Glasgow, Scotland.  I transferred to the Glasgow School of Art in 2000 , where my sole focus was on ceramic design.  I graduated from the GSA in 2002 with a B.A. in ceramic design.

I began this new series of work in my home studio in 2014 and started Elements of Gray in July of 2015.  I’m embarking on a new journey and finding constant inspiration and joy in ceramics and am looking forward to what story my clay will tell.

My pieces are very organic in shape and I find I am often inspired by nature and its textures.  I enjoy pushing the limits of clay, creating thin and delicate pieces that are still functional.  I find joy and calm in creating, working with my hands to shape the clay into something beautiful.  Clay itself, inspires me.  For centuries people have used ceramic pottery to carry water, cook and serve food, provide beauty and tell a story.  I love that each piece of clay tells a story.

I hope you enjoy both the function of my pieces and the story they tell.

MY PROCESS

I hand build each piece from a single slab of clay.  Each piece is then rolled, textured, shaped and glazed by hand. This process helps me ensure that all pieces are held to the highest standard of quality. While there might be slight imperfections due to the handmade process, I do not sell any pieces that I wouldn't use, give or display myself.

Each piece is handmade, therefore each piece will be slightly different to the next. I am not a production facility and make each piece from start to finish and glaze each piece by hand (3 coats of glaze hand painted inside and out).  A piece photographed for my online store may be different to the one you receive upon purchase.  It will always be the pattern, color and size that you requested, but may vary slightly.  If you have any concerns or issues regarding this please do not hesitate to contact me.
